Tottenham superstar Son Heung-min explains why he has been under ‘more pressure’ this season
Tottenham Hotspur superstar Son Heung-min has been having a season so subpar that the poor guy thinks he was a major reason why Antonio Conte left the club by mutual consent in March.
The South Korean international won the Premier League Golden Boot last season when he netted 23 goals in the competition. Actually, he shared it with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who scored the same amount of goals.
But he got a trophy nonetheless and that is what counts. Son scored in just one out of the first 15 Premier League games this season. Compared to that, he now has three strikes in his last seven league games – not the ideal tally but it’s still better.
According to the former Bayer Leverkusen winger, the Golden Boot win brought more attention and pressure on him. He said (h/t Evening Standard):
“Look, if I want to make excuses for the way I’ve played, I can find lots of them, but I’m not the type of guy who goes around making excuses and saying, ‘That was not the real me’. It happened, you move on, and I accept I was not at the top level. Last season was fantastic and to win the Golden Boot was a magical moment which gave me amazing confidence.
“Coming into the new season, everyone was saying, ‘Sonny’s got the Golden Boot’ and expecting me to have another amazing run, but sometimes it’s not that simple because you get more attention and more pressure – which I love.”
One must note that Son is using the words pressure and attention here in a positive sense – two things that he derives his motivation from. We have seen the 30-year-old rise up to the occasion in important games.
He scored in our 2-1 win against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League this weekend with a beautifully-placed curling shot to open the scoring. It brought up his 100th goal in the competition since he joined us from the Bundesliga.

That is an exclusive club that some of the best Premier League attackers have failed to join. His class and quality is there for everyone to see and it is good to see him acknowledge his flaws and trying to work on it. It is the hallmark of a world-class, humble footballer looking to do his very best for the club.
