Ryan Mason answers if Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Moura gifted Liverpool their late winner
Harry Kane went straight to Lucas Moura after Liverpool’s fourth goal in their 4-3 Premier League win against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.
He knew the Brazilian forward had made a mistake and wanted to console him. So did his teammates after the full-time whistle. Everyone inside Anfield and those watching the game on the screens knew that he was at fault for Diogo Jota’s goal.
The former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) winger tried to play a backpass when Alisson Becker cleared the ball in the fifth minute of stoppage time. It was curious.
Who did he want to find with it? He misplaced the pass, which fell straight to Diogo Jota, who latched on to it and scored with a left-footed shot. The goal came instantly after Richarlison’s stoppage-time strike.
And that made it hurt more. Jota, in all honesty, shouldn’t have been on the pitch to begin with, given his horrific high boot tackle on Oliver Skipp in the 81st minute which only drew a yellow card from Paul Tierney.
Ryan Mason was asked to give his verdict on Lucas’ mistake which directly caused the Reds’ fourth and decisive goal of the game. The Englishman replied, via Sky Sports (h/t BBC):
“I’m not going to speak about individuals, those conversations stay in our changing room. The overall feeling is devastation.”
Literally finding an opposition player with a misplaced pass in your defensive third is a mistake. No hiding or sugarcoating it. He came in the 90th minute to add an extra body up front.
Perhaps his feet were still cold and he was not up to the intensity required for the moment. Mason is right to not publicly call him out like that. The 30-year-old is anyway headed for the exit door as a free agent this summer if he doesn’t renew his deal (Transfermarkt).

There are a lot of other moments in the game that need analysing but one cannot ignore individual mistakes that we made against Liverpool. We just need to have players that are up to the level and Lucas wasn’t in his very short cameo at Anfield.
