Tottenham Hotspur enquired about Andre Onana before Manchester United transfer

Inter Milan shot-stopper Andre Onana was of interest to Tottenham Hotspur prior to his move to Manchester United in the ongoing transfer window.

The 27-year-old completed a switch to the Old Trafford side from the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza side for an initial fee of £43.8 million. However, the Red Devils were not the only team looking to acquire his services.

Speaking to CalcioMercato.it (h/t Manchester Evening News), the Cameroonian’s agent, Albert Botines, revealed that Spurs were also looking to acquire the goalkeeper’s services this summer.

“It all started a few months ago. Around April many people inquired about the player. Tottenham asked for information, Chelsea had a very strong interest. There were meetings in London and Chelsea had also met with Inter, but the figure of Ten Hag was key.”

Apart from Tottenham, London rivals Chelsea also had Onana on their radar. The Blues were keen on getting a hold of the shot-stopper’s signature from Inter.

However, in the end, the Cameroonian opted to reunite with Erik ten Hag at United. The 27-year-old played under the Dutch manager during their time together at Ajax Amsterdam. Therefore, it is not surprising seeing the goalkeeper move to the Red Devils.

At the Nerazzurri, Onana caught a lot of people’s attention with his displays, especially in the Champions League. The 27-year-old put in some impressive performances for the Serie A giants in the UCL as they made it to the final.

In the end, Tottenham added Guglielmo Vicario to their ranks. The Italian national was signed from Empoli recently. The shot-stopper established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A before making the move to the North London side.

Hugo Lloris has been our number one for over a decade now. However, the 36-year-old has not been at his best of late and it looks like the French national’s time at the Lilywhites is coming to an end.

Therefore, we evidently needed to add a new number one to our ranks this summer. It will be interesting to see how Onana and Vicario will fare in their debut campaign in the English top flight.
