Lothar Matthaus feels Bayern Munich “blackmailed” by Tottenham Hotspur in Harry Kane pursuit
Bayern Munich icon Lothar Matthaus feels the Bundesliga giants were “blackmailed” by Tottenham Hotspur in their bid to sign Harry Kane.
The Bavarians acquired the services of the England international from the North London side for a package deal of £100 million. On his debut in the Bundesliga on 18 August against Werder Bremen, the 30-year-old scored and set up one goal in the 4-0 victory.
However, speaking to Sky Sport, Matthaus, who spent two successful stints during his playing career at Bayern, feels the Allianz Arena side overpaid to get a hold of Kane’s signature.
“Those in charge at Bayern were and are 100 per cent convinced of Harry Kane. And that’s why they stretched themselves, that’s why they pushed their limits. And maybe Bayern has also in quotation marks a little blackmailed from Tottenham.”
In the 2014/15 term, the English national broke into Tottenham’s first-team setup after making his way through the youth ranks at the club. Subsequently, the forward grew from strength to strength and established himself as one of the best strikers in the Premier League.
Over the years, Kane had been consistently finding the back of the net for the North London side. Last season, the forward ended up breaking Jimmy Greaves’ record and became Spurs’ all-time top scorer.
In the previous campaign, the English skipper was our only reliable attacker. Therefore, despite the striker’s Tottenham contract running down in the summer of 2024, it is understandable that the Lilywhites held out for a massive fee.
Spurs have started the 2023/24 term without any hangover from Kane’s departure. The opening game of the new season saw Brentford hold us to a 2-2 draw.
However, Ange Postecoglou was able to bring the best out of the team in the 2-0 win over Manchester United on 19 August. However, in both the English top-flight matches, Richarlison played up top but failed to make the most of his chances.

Bayern have got a world-class player for a reasonable fee. Therefore, they should not feel hard done by the deal. Hopefully, we will be able to cope without the English national going forward.
