Ange Postecoglou not surprised with the lack of fluency from Tottenham Hotspur vs Fulham

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou was not surprised by the lack of fluency from the North London side in the loss against Fulham.

Spurs visited the Craven Cottage on 29 August in the second round of the Carabao Cup. The Australian manager made nine changes to the team that started in the 2-0 win over Bournemouth.

Unfortunately, Tottenham did not look their best. The North London side struggled, especially in the first half, and most of the players were unable to make a big enough impact.

Speaking to the media via football.london after the defeat, Postecoglou expressed his disappointment at being knocked out of the cup and admitted that his changes played a part in Spurs’ demise.

“Obviously disappointed with the outcome, getting knocked out of the cup. We weren’t at our fluent best particularly early on which was not surprising considering the amount of changes I made. A lot of the boys tonight, it was their first start of the season.”

While it is understandable that the gaffer made wholesale changes ahead of the cup tie, we were taking on an established Premier League team like Fulham. Therefore, the Australian manager should arguably have been a bit conservative.

Marco Silva’s team were the better side in the opening minutes of the game and ended up taking the lead through a Micky van de Ven own goal. We went into the break a goal down.

Thankfully, the North London side put on a better show in the second half. Then, at around the hour mark, Richarlison found the back of the net and scored his first goal for Spurs in the 2023/24 term.

In the end, the fixture went to penalties. Fulham started off the proceedings and scored all of their spot kicks. Unfortunately, for Tottenham, Davinson Sanchez missed from 12 yards out.
