“We played around a bit”- Lazio chief comments on transfer saga involving Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris

Lazio director Angelo Fabiani plays down Hugo Lloris saga

Speaking to Cittaceleste, Lazio’s Sporting Director, Angelo Fabiani, has played down the rumours that Tottenham veteran Hugo Lloris turned the Italian club down this summer, calling the Frenchman just a ‘market opportunity’.

The Stadio Olimpico seemed destined to become Lloris’ new home as sources fervently predicted the goalkeeper’s imminent move to the heart of Rome. However, things did not pan out that way.

RMC Sport reporter Fabrice Hawkins brought a twist to the tale, revealing that Lloris had, in fact, rebuffed the opportunity to join forces with Maurizio Sarri’s squad. The reason cited for his decision was a reluctance to assume the role of understudy to Ivan Provedel.

With Ange Postecoglou also confirming Lloris’ impending departure from Hotspur Way during a press conference, the riddle surrounding the Frenchman’s fate appeared to gain clarity. However, there seems to be no breakthrough with any club yet.

With just a year remaining on his contract, the Lilywhites seem to be contemplating a possible termination. It was against this backdrop that Angelo Fabiani stepped into the fray, breaking his silence on the matter in an interview with Cittaceleste.

Fabiani’s remarks offered insights into Lazio’s perspective on the Lloris situation. Addressing reports of the goalkeeper’s rejection, the Sporting Director maintained a diplomatic stance.

“Lloris was an opportunity but nobody said no to us. We played around a bit, as is often done on the transfer market.”

Lloris’ role in the narrative may have been central, but Fabiani’s statements now offer a broader perspective. They underline the intricacies of transfer dealings, where outcomes are influenced by multiple factors, often hidden from the spotlight.

While Lloris’ choice to remain at the pinnacle of his career rather than occupy a secondary role in another team’s setup is commendable, it is difficult to see which club needs a first-choice goalie so close to the end of the transfer window.

Tottenham and Lazio fans are left wondering what might have been, yet the words of Angelo Fabiani echo with a sense of understanding and closure. What remains to be seen is how Tottenham ship out Lloris.
