Arsenal legend Paul Merson says top-four would be ‘an unbelievable season’ for Tottenham Hotspur
Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Tottenham Hotspur will not win the Premier League this season.
But he thinks a top-four finish will qualify as an unbelievable season for Spurs. It has been a common topic of discussion in recent weeks — pundits and rival fans have been saying that Tottenham won’t be top of the table at the end of the season.
Tottenham are currently top of the table after eight games, unbeaten and with 20 points… the same as Arsenal. We lead our north London rivals on goals scored and hold a two-point lead over Manchester City.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, the former Arsenal star, who won two first-division titles, stated:
“…They are top of the league at the moment – will they stay there? No, but that is not the point. If they were to get in the Champions League next season, then that would be an unbelievable season for Tottenham.”
It wouldn’t sit well with Tottenham fans if one of their club legends backed Tottenham for the title. But if Merson genuinely believes a top-four season would be ‘unbelievable’ for us, then he is mistaken.
Of course, the competition is intense and before the start of the season, and especially after Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich, most of our fans would have taken a top-four finish with both hands.
But since then, Ange Postecoglou has reinvigorated this Spurs team and reminded Tottenham fans of the team they saw in Mauricio Pochettino’s finest years in north London. This time, we aren’t built around one man and are playing like a team.
We held Arsenal to a draw, beat Luton Town after going down to 10 men, and secured heroic wins against Liverpool and Sheffield United. It may just be eight games so far, but during that time, we have shown just how good we can be in any situation thrown at us.

And Spurs fans certainly won’t think a top-four finish is ‘unbelievable’. We have higher standards than that. We may not have won the league in a long time but we have finished in the top four more times than Arsenal since 2015… So perhaps a top-four finish this season would be more ‘unbelievable’ for the Gunners than it would for Tottenham.
