Juventus sent scouts to watch 28-year-old Tottenham star Pierre-Emile Hojberg on international duty
It is becoming increasingly obvious now that Italian giants Juventus have a firm interest in Tottenham Hotspur star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. There is some update on this situation every other day and they look to be in the driver’s seat to sign the Dane.
Can anyone blame them though? After all, doesn’t Hojbjerg feel like a player born to play in a team like Juventus or Atletico Madrid? Maybe that is why he fit in like a glove in Jose Mourinho’s and Antonio Conte’s Tottenham and maybe that is why he doesn’t fit in Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham.
When you think of Hojbjerg, you don’t think of flair. You don’t think creativity. You don’t think, “Oh my god, he is going play a line-breaking pass to find Son Heung-min behind the defence!”. Instead, what comes to your mind is commitment.
A player who always leaves his heart and soul on the pitch. A player who keeps running up and down tirelessly and helps out in both attack and defence. Most importantly, a player who knows his limitations very well and always plays to his strengths.
Now, it is not anyone’s fault that Ange Postecoglou does not really rate him. The Australian manager prefers the midfielders in his team to be of a very specific profile and we can all agree that the Dane does not necessarily fit into that mould.
It is easy to forget that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is just 28 years old though. The former Southampton midfielder is yet to hit the prime years of his career. He deserves to be playing regularly in a team that suits his play style.
This is where Juventus come in. According to the Italian publication Gazzetta, the Italian club have sent their scouts to check on the player who is on international duty with the Danish national team. After all, they can’t send their scouts to a Tottenham game as Hojbjerg hardly features.
With Rodrigo Bentancur coming back soon, Tottenham will have four solid options in midfield – Yves Bissouma, Bentancur, Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr. Objectively looking, they might not have a problem with letting Hojbjerg leave.
However, this is a very weird situation for Tottenham and it needs some perspective. Both Bissouma and Sarr are likely to be away for at least one month early next year when they are away on national duty for the AFCON.
This would leave Tottenham incredibly thin in midfield and this could be one of the reasons they might want to hold on to Hojbjerg. However, it would be such a waste of talent and it doesn’t make much sense for the coach to keep a player who doesn’t convince him.
