Barcelona see Tottenham star Giovani Lo Celso as ‘fantastic replacement’ for injured Gavi
According to a report from Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Tottenham Hotspur star Giovani Lo Celso is seen as a ‘fantastic replacement’ for the injured Gavi.
The Spanish midfielder has suffered a serious ACL injury which will put him out of action for a lengthy period of time. Given the 19-year-old’s importance to Barcelona, they are unsurprisingly interested in finding a replacement for him.
For this, they will apparently look at Lo Celso once again after missing out on the Argentina international in the summer. The report states that the ideal move will be a loan deal, as it could help Barca with the FFP rules and provide the midfielder with much-needed playing time.
Moreover, in that way, Lo Celso will serve Barcelona’s purpose until Gavi returns and can then return to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season.
What should Spurs do?
So, how will such a move look for Tottenham? Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are set to leave Tottenham Hotspur for a number of weeks in early 2024 for AFCON, which will leave us short of options in midfield.
James Maddison’s return injury also reminded us that we need strength in depth. And for that reason, Spurs must assess all their options carefully, ensuring that all first-team stars are fit and ready to play if Lo Celso is allowed to leave temporarily.
If Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg stays beyond the winter transfer window, then the former Villarreal and Real Betis midfielder’s absence may not be felt too much. Ange Postecoglou anyway doesn’t see him as a first-string player right now.

The 27-year-old Argentina international, who was loaned to the Yellow Submarine last year and has just over a year and a half remaining on his contract (Transfermarkt), has played just 83 minutes of first-team football for Tottenham this season. That’s a shockingly low number that can improve if he swaps N17 for Barca.
