Transfer News: Sporting CP want Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier but on one condition

Sporting CP apparently want to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier at the end of the season but on one condition.

According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo (h/t ESPN), they will only agree to bring in the England international if he agrees to slash his wages to €2million per year. Sporting, of course, honed Dier’s skills until his move to Spurs in 2014.

The 29-year-old recently talked about a potential return to Lisbon in the future and it is thought that the Portuguese giants are contemplating signing him on a free transfer. It doesn’t seem that a new contract is coming at Spurs.

If it was, it would have come already. Then again, you can’t really rule out anything in football. Dier is currently an important player for Tottenham despite not starting regularly under Ange Postecoglou at the start of the season.

What next for Dier?

He was completely frozen out of the first team as the Australian-Greek manager preferred to start the pairing of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. But the former’s injury and the latter’s suspension, both in the same 4-1 loss against Chelsea, has allowed the Englishman to sneak back into the XI.

In fact, he is arguably our only natural centre-back right now, with Ben Davies playing out of position and partnering him at the back in the 2-1 loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Injuries have truly hit Tottenham.

And that is why we can’t and shouldn’t even think of offloading Dier in the January transfer window, be it for a transfer fee, unless we have some incomings planned. We can’t jeopardise our season in this manner.

After that, a move to Portugal could suit Dier, who will have a team where he can expect to start regularly, in an environment he is already familiar with. It will also free our wage bill to sign a new centre-back — one who can be considered an upgrade on the England international.

As for the pay cut, it remains to be seen if he will be open to it. He is yet to hit his 30s and is a Premier League proven player, so one can’t rule out lucrative contract offers for him if he does become available on the free agent market.
