Chris Sutton previews Manchester City vs Tottenham

Sunday’s visit to Etihad will mark the first time Ange Postecoglou takes on Pep Guardiola for the first time in a competitive match as Spurs travel to the Etihad to face Manchester City. Both teams are on contrasting fortunes coming into this fixture and BBC pundit Chris Sutton predicts a tough outing for the Lilywhites.

After initially going on an impressive ten-game unbeaten streak in the league, Ange’s men faltered 4-1 against Chelsea followed by two back-to-back defeats to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa.

Ange’s high defensive line approach has been found out due to the lack of pacy centre-backs following Micky van de Ven’s injury and Cristian Romero’s red card, both against Chelsea and since then, Spurs have not had it their way when it comes to results.

Speaking to the BBC, Sutton predicted a 4-2 loss for the away team even though he remained adamant that Spurs would create a few good chances like they did against Villa, but Man City are Man City.

Guardiola faced Postecoglou for the first time in a pre-season game back in 2019. Ange was manager of Yokohama F. Marinos back then, and that game also ended in Guardiola’s favour even though Ange’s side enjoyed more possession. Great to do that against a Pep Guardiola side albeit a pre-season fixture.

Coming back to the present, as Tottenham look to bounce back from recent setbacks and secure a positive result against a formidable opponent, the tactical approach, defensive resilience, and the ability to capitalise on scoring opportunities will be crucial elements for Ange and Co.

We hope that the team can overcome recent setbacks and put up a resilient performance against the reigning champions.

As the Lilywhites navigate a challenging period, the clash with Manchester City provides an opportunity to showcase their mettle and potentially turn the tide in their favour. Hopefully, we can prove Sutton and many others wrong and try and put up a good fight at the Etihad, and aim for a draw at least.
