Coaches at Tottenham Hotspur wish to reproduce ‘genius’ midfielder who played under Mauricio Pochettino
Mousa Dembele who found his stride under Mauricio Pochettino is one of the most underrated players to ever feature for Tottenham Hotspur. Mostly unrecognized by the world, but he was held to the highest standard by his peers at the club.
What mostly caught people’s eyes about Dembele’s game were his feet. His teammates described them as ballerina’s feet. They believed that the way he dribbled around defenders made him look like a ballerina.
The Belgium national played with a lot of physicality and was stronger than most. There weren’t a lot of defenders that could take the ball away from him. A quality that was crucial for the brand of football that Pochettino played.
His time with the Lilywhites came to an end in 2019. The star midfielder left the club to go on and play in China. A move that ultimately put an end to his time in Europe. It was believed that Dembele took the move because his body couldn’t keep up with the physicality anymore.
The last game that he played for the Spurs ended with him being taken off with an injured ankle. He has forever cemented his name in the annals of Tottenham’s history books. Those who played with him thought him to be greater than the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
According to The Athletic (paid subscription), Tottenham Hotspur still has managers who talk of producing a ‘genius’ of his calibre. Yves Bissouma has been said to have similarities with the player.

The main reason behind Tottenham still mooning over Dembele is because of how much better the current team would be with a player like him. His style of play would perfectly fit into Ange Postecoglou’s system.
