Jamie Carragher recalls Curtis Jones’ red card against Tottenham Hotspur in the light of recent events

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher reflects on Curtis Jones‘ red card against Tottenham Hotspur based on recent events against Bournemouth. According to Football London, Carragher was shocked to see a different result this time.

Liverpool thrashed AFC Bournemouth to extend their lead. Justin Kluivert’s high tackle on Luis Diaz was left unpunished, leaving Jurgen Klopp furious. The VAR failed to intervene as well.

Carragher took this incident to reflect on a similar situation that happened in September. A highly scintillating face-off between Liverpool and Spurs saw two Reds players receive red cards. Carragher highlighted Liverpool’s first red card with Curtis Jones being on the receiving end for clipping Yves Bissouma’s ankle.

Kluivert’s tackle on Luis Diaz wasn’t any different, according to the former Reds star. He said:

“I think Kluivert is a lucky boy,” he said. “As a former player, you never want to see the red card but I think Liverpool will be really frustrated that Curtis Jones was sent off for something similar against Tottenham before. When you see it in slow-motion you think, ‘It’s a shocker, it’s a red card’.”

The present scenario

The clash between Spurs and Liverpool was heated until the final whistle was blown. Despite being reduced to 10 men, the Merseysiders held their nerve against a strong Spurs team at their home.

Many believe Liverpool were robbed in that game as there were several controversial VAR incidents. Two sent-offs involved Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota. A Luis Diaz goal was adjudged off-side, only for replays to confirm that the VAR decision was inaccurate.

Even then, it took an own-goal from Joel Matip in the dying seconds for Tottenham to seal the deal. Tottenham maintained their top spot following the game, however, the tables have turned! Liverpool sit atop the league table with an eight-point lead over fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

The reverse fixture is scheduled on 4th May, granting Liverpool an opportunity to earn bragging rights for the current season. The Lilywhites are doing their best to crawl up the league table and we should have a definite winner by the time these two clash again.
