Ex-Tottenham star believes Emerson Royal and Ben Davies will continue to be crucial for the team this season

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder and current football pundit Jermaine Jenas lauds Emerson Royal and Ben Davies, per BBC Sport. Jenas, who played over 200 games for Spurs between 2005 and 2013, backed the Tottenham defensive duo despite new arrivals. He said:

“On top of bringing players in, it was important to hold on to people like Ben Davies and Emerson Royal, who are going to play their part as well.

The ex-Tottenham star recalled important roles donned by Emerson and Davies during the absence of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. According to him, Davies was the best player for the Lilywhites pre-Christmas period.

The Davies-Royal pair guarded the Spurs’ defence until their primary centre-back options returned. They are now relegated to the bench, with no playing minutes in sight. The arrival of Radu Dragusin this January has pushed their chances further down.

Ange Postecoglou’s dilemma

The Tottenham gaffer seems to have everything he needs to climb up the ladder yet seems empty. From struggling to fill his starting XI, the manager now has several players at his disposal for each position.

Tottenham looks particularly stacked in the defensive department. The North Londoners have Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven as their primary options. Then there is Ben Davies alongside Emerson Royal who proved to be a strong backup option.

The arrival of strong, fast and young skilful defender Radu Dragusin has further fortified the back-four options. However, this also leaves a major confusion for the former Celtis boss to deal with. Blowing up the lead twice against Everton has raised concerns over Tottenham’s ‘defence’.

More Tottenham Hotspur News-

Even though Ange is far from pushing Romero or Micky down the pecking order, Jermain Jenas believes Davies and Royal will play their parts for the remainder of the season. Spurs are back on the fifth position in the league table. What awaits them for the next few months seems to be an interesting journey.
