MBC Television commentator Seo Hyung-wook hints that Tottenham Hotspur talisman Son Heung-min can retire from national duty

According to BBC, MBC Television commentator Seo Hyung-wook says that there might be great worry for South Korean fans as the Asian Cup semi-final defeat against Jordan might see Son Heung-min for the last time wearing the national jersey.

In the wake of South Korea’s unexpected elimination, rumours abound concerning the fate of Klinsmann. The German, who has wide experience in football management including work with the German national team, Bayern Munich, and the USMNT, took over the head coach role for the Asian country in February 2023.

Seo said:

“Fans are devastated and disappointed and they are worrying the coach will not resign but that Son will quit the national team.”

South Korea, who had struggled to find their rhythm throughout the tournament, depending on flashes of brilliance from their star players but appearing to lack a clear game strategy, delivered a rather disappointing performance against Jordan, a nation ranked 87th in the world. In the first half, Son had the fewest touches out of all the players on the pitch. South Korea struggled in midfield, lacking creativity and losing battles.

After the match, Son, who was struggling to produce a major impact against Jordan, and his 3 goals in the tournament all were through penalties and a free-kick remarked that he would think about his future in international football.

Opinions on his comments vary, with some interpreting them as a subtle expression of his discontent with the team’s trajectory, while others believe they were driven by intense emotion. Following the final whistle, the 31-year-old captain of the Spurs was overcome with devastation, struggling to hold back tears as he offered his apologies to the fans.

Jurgen Klinsmann, the manager, was under the spotlight for the poor performance of the team during the championship. It seemed that he was an archaic coach who was fixated on the 4-4-2 formation and largely depended on Son to create moments of brilliance.

Son is set to make his return to Tottenham on Thursday and is expected to play against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. Let’s hope that this devastating result won’t affect him while playing for us. We immensely hope he finds the back of the net more often to help him uplift his morale.
