James Ward-Prowse names Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur the most underrated midfielder this season

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse has named Tottenham Hotspur star Rodrigo Bentancur as the most underrated midfielder of this season, according to the YouTube video shared by Sky Sports Premier League. He said:

He’s (Bentancur) not featured much but when I’ve seen him. I think from the times I have watched him. I think first of all thing that stands out is his energy. The way he can get about, I think he’s quite infectious with how he plays. He can pick up the ball and drive. He makes good decisions and I think he just looks good on the eye.’

James Ward-Prowse is every Spurs fan, if not an EPL fan right now. The Uruguayan has had his fair (or unfair) share of injuries this season. The 26-year-old has missed 15 games out of 25 so far. His unavailability remains one of the reasons for Tottenham’s topsy-turvy season this term.

Rodrigo Bentancur was the go-to player for his manager during the absence of Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr due to AFCON duties. However, with the squad being complete, the Uruguayan gets only scattered appearances.

Never the same after the injury

While speaking in the matchday programme, Bentancur revealed his struggles with getting back to form. He said:

“I do believe that I’m gradually getting back to my pre-injury form. I realise I’m still just a little bit off that right now, but I was out of action for over nine, almost 10 months, between the two injuries, and that really is a long time. I have to just be calm, keep working hard and training like l have been and then it won’t be long before I’m back at my usual level once again.”

A midfield lineup without Bentancur was hard to imagine until a few months ago. Unfortunately, the present holds a different reality for the 26-year-old. Immense competition in the position often pushes Bentancur to the bench.

The poor performance of his midfielders during the Wolves games might urge Postecoglou to deploy against Palace in their next fixture. Tottenham will have a break this week due to Chelsea’s EFL trophy commitments.
