Ange Postecoglou is full of praise for Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min and his pressing
Ange Postecoglou has revealed a surprising area in which captain Son Heung-min has excelled for Tottenham Hotspur this season, highlighting his exceptional contribution beyond just scoring goals and providing assists.
Postecoglou spoke about the South Korean’s integral role in initiating Tottenham’s aggressive pressing game. He lauded Son’s relentless work rate and tenacity, particularly in leading the team’s high press and disrupting opponents’ build-up play. Here is what the manager told Football London:
“It’s no secret in our team, part of our big strength is our ability to really be aggressive in the way we press other teams and that starts with our attacking players and that’s where Sonny has been unbelievable for us this year,”
“Even at the weekend he kept harassing and chasing and we’ve scored a lot of goals this year from our front three really having an appetite to be our first form of defence. We’ve won a lot of balls in our front third from which invariably they are the beneficiaries of because they get their goals and assists but that’s a big part of it.”
Son’s defensive contribution has been instrumental in Tottenham’s success, with Postecoglou praising his commitment to pressurise the opposition and win the second balls, ultimately creating turnovers in advantageous positions. This relentless pressing has not only stifled opposition attacks but also directly contributed to Tottenham’s attacking opportunities.
His defensive contribution may not always be apparent on the scoresheet, but the impact of Son Heung-min is felt throughout the team’s defensive structure. His willingness to lead the press sets the tone for Tottenham’s defensive intensity and catalyses the team’s overall defensive solidity.
In addition to his defensive work rate, Son has continued to deliver in attack, showcasing his clinical finishing and creative instincts. With 15 goals and eight assists in 27 appearances across all competitions this season, he remains one of Tottenham’s most potent attacking threats.
