Brennan Johnson’s rising influence at Tottenham Hotspur
Brennan Johnson has been making massive strides since making his move to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer. He moved to N17 last summer in a £47.5 million Deadline Day deal from Nottingham Forest.
While the 22-year-old endured a slow start to life in North London, he started catching up to the pace of playing for a big six, and his influence at the club has been growing ever since. Brennan Johnson has triumphed over the initial obstacles of a high-profile move such as his and has contributed significantly against Crystal Palace and Luton Town while scoring crucial goals in Spurs wins over Brentford and Brighton.
The Welshman was on target once again in the Lilywhites’ mid-week draw against West Ham. The former Nottingham Forest winger scored an early goal from a Timo Werner cross from the left flank. However, his early strike was soon cancelled by a Kurt Zouma header from a corner heading into the conclusion of the first half.
Is Johnson a success story in making?
Following his goal against the Hammers, he has a better goal-contribution record in the Premier League with Tottenham than with his former employers. Brennan contributed to 12 goals in 24 appearances for Spurs, while he only had 11 goal involvements in the English top-tier for Forest in 41 games.
In the pre-match press conference for the Spurs fixture against Brennan Johnson’s boyhood club, Nottingham Forest, Ange Postecoglou spoke about the 22-year-old’s time and progress since joining the North London giants. He said (via. Football. London):
“Don’t know if we’ve made him more lethal. His goalscoring record was pretty decent before. I just think you look at a player differently and it takes time. And in that kind of area, there is a lot more pressure on new signings because they invariably get measured in terms of outcomes like goals and assists, and if you don’t have that… his general play was always very good for us.
“I think now he’s found a bit of confidence and consistency and understanding of how we play and he’s getting the rewards which is great. But he’s still a young guy and we bought him with very much an eye that whatever he does this year there’s definitely a lot more in him, and when you see the improvement that encourages us even more because it makes you think that if we invest the time in him even more he’s going to be a super player for us.”

The Australian gaffer made a point about Brennan finding consistency and confidence, which we could see in how he is moving when he takes the field representing the club. He is still young, and if the club continues to invest time in him, as Ange suggests, he is going to become a big player at the club.
Hopefully, his purple patch continues at the weekend with a goal or two against Nottingham.
