Familiar woes come back to haunt Tottenham as Ange Postecoglou points out what went wrong against Chelsea

Paul Merson believes Arsenal's winner against Tottenham Hotspur should have been ruled out.

Tottenham’s top-four hopes hanging by a thread after Stamford Bridge woes

Stamford Bridge proved to be a heartbreak for Tottenham Hotspur and Ange Postecoglou as they failed to capitalize on an opportunity to bridge the gap to fourth-placed Aston Villa. Spurs ended a defeat in West London to aggregate their tally to zero points out of a possible nine in the last three games, which comes as a massive dent in their top-four hopes.

The Lilywhites encountered Chelsea on the back of successive defeats against Newcastle United and Arsenal. Both games lacked a certain intent from Tottenham, while Newcastle thumped the North Londoners and out-witted them on all tactical fronts. The Gunners suffocated Spurs, with goals from Ange’s side coming only from Arsenal’s mistakes.

Spurs lost to Chelsea, extending their winless run to three games (Newcastle, Arsenal) and gaining no points.

Ange Postecoglou enjoyed an impressive start to life at White Hart Lane; however, his side has been struggling lately, and this coming in at the business end of the season means that Spurs miss out on everything they have worked hard for all season.

The poor display in West London leaves Spurs with slender chances of UEFA Champions League qualification as they continue to chase fourth-placed Aston Villa. Even though the North Londoners have a game in hand, they are trailing by seven points to Unai Emery’s side.

Postecoglou blames lack of conviction for Spurs’ dismal run

Four games left and a chance to end on a positive note as Spurs chase an unlikely UCL qualification.

There has always been a shadow at Spurs that lacks a cultural style of play, and that came through against Chelsea yesterday as Ange Postecoglou, in his post-match press conference, admitted that his side lacked conviction and the right mindset in the game.

The Australian gaffer said in his post-game press conference (via. The Guardian):

“We lacked a real conviction and positive mindset in our football. We didn’t really have any fluency or any sort of aggression with or without the ball. It’s a bit unlike us.”
