Destiny Udogie shortlisted for Premier League Young Player of the Season award

Destiny Udogie and his meteoric rise in English football has been nothing short of spectacular, and now the Tottenham Hotspur defender finds himself among the nominees for the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season award for the 2023/24 campaign.

Club report here. Making history as Spurs’ first-ever nominee for the award introduced by the Premier League in 2019, Udogie has left an indelible mark in his debut season in England’s top flight. Signed from Udinese in the summer of 2022 and making the move permanent the following year, the 21-year-old wasted no time in making his presence felt at North London.

Under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, Udogie has thrived as an inverted left full-back, showcasing a blend of defensive solidity and attacking flair that has endeared him to the Tottenham faithful. His performances on the pitch have been nothing short of electrifying, cementing his status as one of the standout players of the season.

Is the YPOTY award in his Destiny for Udogie?

Defensively, Udogie’s certainly been a rock at the back, relying on his strength, pace, and unshakeable determination to thwart opposition attacks.

But it’s Udogie’s contributions in the final third that really set him apart. With a smooth touch and spot-on ball control, the Italian full-back’s consistently found himself in advanced positions, causing a ruckus for opposing defences. His attacking instincts have seen him directly involved in five league goals for Spurs this season, with two goals to his name and three assists to boot.

However, Udogie’s cracking season saw itself marred by injury last month, as he coped a quad injury in training that needed surgery. Despite the setback, the

young defender is expected to make a full recovery and return to the squad during pre-season training, ready to pick up where he left off and continue hisrise to fame.
