Copa America star Jonathan David is a target for Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to bring in a marquee striker this summer, and multiple players have been linked with a move to White Hart Lane as the North Londoners look to bolster their attacking firepower for the upcoming season. One of the players linked with a move to the Lilywhites is Lille striker Jonathan David, as the links to a move for the Canadian striker intensify.

The 24-year-old has been plying his trade for Ligue 1 side Lille since 2020 and has quickly established himself as an integral part at Stade Pierre Mauroy, following a tally of 84 goals and 18 assists in 183 appearances for the French giants spanning across all competitions.

He is showcasing his competitive prowess at Copa America at the time of writing, as he scored the only goal for the Canadian side this campaign when he scored against Peru last week and is responsible for their sole win, which keeps them second in the group as they qualify for the quarterfinals of the competition.

£25m bargain?

The North Londoners are desperate for a new acquisition this summer as they look to fill the Harry Kane-shaped void in the offensive line. The club decided against signing a replacement for the Spurs leading goalscorer following his move to Bayern Munich. Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou had to make do with Son filling the central space upfront following Richarlison‘s injury problems in the recently concluded campaign, and the Australian boss is looking to ensure he has top talent in the number nine role come the new season.

Jonathan David has scored 26 goals each of the last two campaigns, and Tottenham would be looking to acquire him on a bargain deal. Spurs correspondent at Football. London, Alasdair Gold, confirms that the club is fortifying their interests in the 24-year-old, who could be available for as little as £25 million this summer.

Answering in his Q&A for Football. London when quizzed about Spurs’ potential move for Jonathan David, Gold said:

“Jonathan David is certainly one of the potential targets on the striker shortlist compiled by Lange and Postecoglou. There’s a fair bit of interest in him because he’s reached the final year of his contract, but at £25 million for a striker who has a track record of getting plenty of goals each season, that’s understandable.”
