Fabrizio Romano provides the latest details on AC Milan’s pursuit of Tottenham star Emerson Royal
Renowned Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest update on Serie A club AC Milan’s pursuit of talented Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal.
Emerson joined Tottenham from Barcelona a few seasons ago and has constantly improved in his time in North London. Extremely ridiculed during his first few months here, the Brazilian took some time adapting to English football.
The 25-year-old has made 79 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career with Spurs, scoring four goals and providing a couple of assists. A designated second-fiddle to the impressive Pedro Porro, Emerson rarely gets a chance to start in his preferred position.
The ex-Real Betis defender however proved to be a joker card for Ange Postecoglou last season, deputising at left-back and in central defence numerous times due to the incessant injury issues Spurs had in this position.
Realising that he is unlikely to have a starting role at the N17, Emerson has been continually linked with a move to the Serie A where AC Milan have shown a keen interest in signing him. Until now, a move hasn’t really materialised.
Now, Romano has revealed that new contacts have taken place between Spurs and AC Milan for the 25-year-old right-back. The player has already given the greenlight to the move for about a couple of months now but the two parties remain apart in valuations. Here is what the Italian journalist tweeted on the situation.
“New direct contact took place for Emerson Royal’s potential move to AC Milan. Emerson gave green light in May and he wants the move, while there’s still a gap between clubs. Tottenham want around €25m to let Emerson leave. Talks to continue, nothing agreed yet.”
€25m is a pretty reasonable fee that Spurs are asking for a player who is yet to enter the prime years of his career. Emerson has what it takes to be a starting right-back for many clubs and would provide competition to Davide Calabria.
Tottenham have just signed Archie Gray from Leeds United and the 18-year-old is perfectly capable of playing at right-back. Even if Spurs move Emerson on, there is no pressing need to sign a replacement for him.

Spurs would welcome money from player sales but they must stand firm in their valuation for Emerson Royal. Ultimately, this is a deal that is bound to go through at some point. Let’s wait and see when and how that happens.
