Tottenham talks with Serie A club collapse as clubs fail to agree cut-price deal

Tottenham talks with Genoa collapse and Djed Spence is to stay put for the time being

According to the BBC, Tottenham Hotspur fail to agree terms with Genoa over a transfer for Djed Spence despite prolonged negotiations.

Spence has been a failed signing for Spurs having failed to win the trust of any manager so far. He was brought in during the period of Antonio Conte but it became very clear early on that the manager did not fancy him.

Then came Ange Postecoglou who took one good look at him and decided that the player was not the kind of right-back he wanted in his system. Subsequently, he was shipped out on loan moves to Leeds United and Genoa.

His time at Genoa was a partial success and his performances were sufficient enough to convince the Italian club to attempt to sign him. However, things seem to have dissipated on the negotiation front.

Spence had a £8.5m option to buy included in his contract with the Italian club but Genoa did not want to trigger the aforementioned amount. Instead, they approached the North London club to negotiate a fee lower than that.

However, and understandably so, Spurs did not want to go below the buy clause. For a player of Spence’s abilities and perceived talent, £8.5m could be a bargain, especially if he comes good on the promise he showed before coming to the N17.

It’s welcoming to see Spurs stand firm on negotiations and not buckle down to the pressure of making sales. Yes, Spence is not a part of our plans but that doesn’t mean any buying club can roll over us and bait us into accepting cents on the dollar.

What does this mean for Spence and Tottenham? Well, Genoa might still come back and agree to pay the amount and take the English wing back to Italy. If not, another loan move seems like the most likely option.

Spence’s career at Tottenham might not have panned out as one expected but he still is young and can come good on the promise he has shown in the past. The next move needs to work out and let’s see what he chooses to do.
