Why Tottenham Hotspur must take the gamble of signing Federico Chiesa for €25m?
It emerged a few weeks ago that Juventus are willing to let 26-year-old Italian international Federico Chiesa [who is Tottenham radar] leave the club this summer for a meagre €25m with the player not a part of new coach Thiago Motta’s plans.
According to CalcioMercato, Tottenham are intrigued by the Euro 2020 star and have already leapfrogged Newcastle United in the race for Chiesa. However, the negotiations haven’t reached full hilt yet.
A left-winger who is equally comfortable playing on the right, Chiesa was one of the highly-rated Italian stars coming out of the Serie A with his performances really catching the eye back in the tournament in 2020.
Before his ACL injury, Chiesa was electric. His teammate Giorgio Chiellini described him back then as ‘unstoppable’. However, the serious injury that kept him out for almost the entirety of the season seems to have killed his confidence.
Since then, the 26-year-old doesn’t seem courageous enough to take his man on like he used to back then. Whilst we do see the odd flashes of brilliance in his game, it’s become few and far for a player of his calibre.
All things considered, Juventus have finally decided to sever ties with the player. With his contract set to expire in less than 12 months, the Italian giants have set a very low asking price for a player with a huge upside.
Is it time for Tottenham to take a gamble?
Let’s call a spade a spade here. For any club, signing Chiesa would be a gamble. The Italian is a pale shadow of his former self and there is no assurance that he will recover his once-adored style of play.
However, the abilities are still very much there in Chiesa and he needs a manager who can bring the best out of him and give him the confidence to shine at the highest level. A good man-manager like Ange Postecoglou might just be what the 26-year-old needs.
Yes, Spurs will need to spend €25m for his signature but they need to look at the upsides of this transfer. Chiesa is 26, an age young enough that he hasn’t entered his so-called prime years yet. He comes with truckloads of experience.
He can be an excellent one-on-one player, capable of beating his man at will. He is a profile that the Spurs squad is lacking at the moment and is equally good on either wing. When in form, he constantly chips in with goals and assists.
Captain Son Heung-min is 32 now and might not have many years left at the very top. His attacking output has declined a bit in the past couple of seasons. As much as Spurs don’t want to face it, they will have to replace him soon.

We think if Chiesa can rediscover his pre-injury quality, he could be Tottenham’s solution to be the South Korean’s replacement in the long run. It’s a big ‘if’ but it’s worth taking the gamble, especially when the asking price is this low. Let’s see if Daniel Levy & co. agree with our sentiments and make a move for Chiesa.
