Tottenham are in desperate need of reinforcements as half of their key players are side lined with injuries, forcing the team to rely on academy players to fill out the squad. With the injury crisis ongoing and the team struggling with their trademark inconsistencies, the situation remains challenging for the north London club.
However, there might be some hope on the horizon, as Tottenham Hotspur are among several Premier League clubs showing interest in Athletic Bilbao’s winger Nico Williams, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Spurs, alongside Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool, have been linked with the “absolutely frightening” 22-year-old forward, who could depart Athletic Bilbao in 2025.
David Ornstein reports that several European and English clubs are eyeing the opportunity to activate Williams’ relatively modest £46m release clause, making a transfer next year a strong possibility. Although the Spanish international is reportedly keen to avoid a winter move, Ornstein has not ruled it out entirely, with Spurs counted among his long-standing admirers.
Nico headed for Premier League football?
Nico Williams has quickly risen as one of Europe’s brightest wingers, delivering an impressive eight goals and 19 assists in 37 appearances for Athletic Bilbao during the 2023/24 season.
His performances were pivotal in Spain’s Euro 2024 success, where he not only scored the opening goal in the final against England but also contributed three goal involvements throughout the tournament. A dynamic “cheat code” forward, Williams thrives on either flank but has primarily featured on the left this season, tallying 18 appearances across all competitions.
Tottenham might prioritise securing a left-sided forward in 2025, especially with the uncertainty surrounding Heung-min Son’s future. The Spurs captain has just seven months remaining on his current deal, which expires at the season’s end, with no agreement on an extension yet.
Writing for the Athletic, the journo reported
“There is a release clause of around €55million (£46m) and Athletic will only sell if that gets activated, so the fact his contract ends in 2027 is irrelevant.
“Williams earns a high salary but the clause is fairly low for a player of this level, so it is probable he will move in 2025 — the bigger question is whether it will be in January or at the end of the season.
“He would prefer not to move in the winter market but you never know. Either way, the likes of Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are among those who hold a long-standing admiration.”

While it seems unlikely for the Basque winger to leave his boyhood club, having risen through Athletic Bilbao’s academy to become a key figure in the senior team, the future remains uncertain. Williams, who currently earns an impressive £172,000 per week, is deeply rooted in his hometown and club culture.
However, if Tottenham were to table a significant offer, it might just pave the way for a surprising turn of events.
