Alasdair Gold talks about Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in signing Nico Williams

Writing on Football. London, Tottenham Hotspur expert Alasdair Gold has explained Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in signing scintillating Spanish star Nico Williams and analyzed the feasibility of such an operation.

The 21-year-old Athletic Bilbao winger has caught the eye with his thrilling displays for La Roja in the ongoing European Championship. Luis de la Fuente’s men find themselves in the semifinals facing France after getting past hosts Germany in the quarters.

It won’t be an exaggeration to say that Spain have been the best team so far in the ongoing tournament, maintaining a 100% record on their way to the semis. Gone are the days of pointless passing and boring possession without any end product. Every pass Spain makes now seems purposeful and they aren’t afraid of being direct.

Two players who have enabled Spain to play this direct style of attacking football are Nico Williams (21) and Lamine Yamal (16). The duo have terrorized opposition defences with their trickery and dribbling abilities and have emerged as chance-creating monsters.

There is no way Barcelona would let Lamine Yamal leave regardless of how many clubs come knocking and what money is thrown at them. However, top clubs around the world have set their sights on Nico, who is perceived as a more approachable target.

Reflecting on Spurs’ interest in the player (unsurprisingly), here is what Alasdair Gold had to write about the club’s chances

“The north London club love Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams but so do most of the biggest clubs in the world and the 21-year-old’s performances for Spain at Euro 2024 have only increased that. The problem doesn’t stop there either as despite a reported £49million up front release clause, the player also already earns £170,000 a week at Athletic Bilbao so the competition will drive that far higher for any potential suitor. So where Tottenham would sit in the food chain even if they did try to make a move for the Euros star remains to be seen.”

However, despite Chelsea and Liverpool’s interest in bringing Nico to the Premier League, with the former even making a formal approach, the 21-year-old has made it very clear that his preferred destination would be Barcelona. [Mirror]

Considering the fact that he is Spanish and that he has a number of friends like Yamal, Pedri and Fermin Lopez who also play for the Catalan giants, it’s not surprising to see the Athletic Bilbao winger preferring a move to the Nou Camp.

Realistically looking at this, Spurs would have never had a chance to sign Nico despite the exciting project they are building especially after failing to qualify for Champions League this season. We would be better off focussing on more realistic targets to bolster the frontline like Jaden Philogene of Hull City, who incidentally is also on Barcelona’s radar.
