Portuguese coach rejects lucrative Saudi move as he stays committed to Premier League ambitions

With just one league game and the highly anticipated Europa League final remaining, the season is drawing to a close for Tottenham. Reflecting on the campaign, things haven’t gone to plan for the Lilywhites, who are set to endure their worst domestic finish in recent history—likely ending up 17th in the table.

Even if Ange Postecoglou manages to deliver Europa League glory, it’s hard to imagine the Australian coach staying on at N17 next season. Now, TBR Football reports that a Premier League manager tipped as a potential replacement for Postecoglou has already turned down an offer from elsewhere.

Tottenham have now recorded 21 league defeats — the most in their Premier League history — leaving Ange Postecoglou on the wrong end of an unwanted record.

Amid growing uncertainty over his future, the club have started exploring potential replacements, with Fulham manager Marco Silva emerging as a serious candidate. The Portuguese coach has also attracted strong interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, who have been making a determined effort to secure the services of the “amazing” 47-year-old. However, a fresh development has now emerged regarding Silva’s decision.

All hopes are left on the Europa League final for the Lilywhites

TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey reports that Marco Silva has rejected Al-Hilal’s offer, even though the Saudi club had reached an agreement with his representatives.

Despite the financial appeal of the deal, Silva has made it clear he’s not ready to leave European football at this stage of his career.

Fulham still hope to secure Silva’s long-term future and now have a narrow window to extend his contract before other clubs step in. TBR Football also reported that Silva’s current deal includes a release clause, and he remains on Tottenham’s shortlist should Ange Postecoglou exit this summer.

Silva is also attracting interest from elsewhere in Europe, including Bayer Leverkusen — who are looking to replace Xabi Alonso following his move to Real Madrid — and RB Leipzig.

A Europa League triumph would end Tottenham’s 17-year wait for a trophy, marking their first major silverware since 2008 and their first European title since 1984. Despite a disastrous domestic campaign, Ange Postecoglou still has the opportunity to rescue the season with victory on the continental stage.

Postecoglou has been at odds with Tottenham supporters after losing matches, signaling the gap between manager and fans is growing. With how the season has gone, it is becoming increasingly difficult to imagine he will remain at the helm at Spurs after the summer.

If Postecoglou were to leave, Marco Silva is one of the top candidates for the job. Silva has shown—with Fulham, despite limitations—that he can make the most of resources and take a team on difficult runs. Silva makes every indication that he would be a great option to take Spurs into a new era.
