Marseille threaten to derail Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of former Manchester United star

Tottenham are facing stumbling block in pursuit of LOSC Lille star Angel Gomes following Marseille’s last-ditch proposal
Tottenham Hotspur are bracing themselves for a massive summer, as Daniel Levy and Co. look to make changes to their squad after the club’s UEFA Europa League triumph.
Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final in Bilbao on Wednesday night and secured qualification for next season’s Champions League. Despite leading the club to their first piece of silverware after more than 17 years, Ange Postecoglou’s future remains up in the air. Reputed journalist David Ornstein earlier this week revealed that the Australian boss would not be surprised if he is shown the door.
Meanwhile, the Lilywhites’ scenario in the transfer market has changed after entry to the Champions League. Set to be armed with more cash to spend in the upcoming transfer window, Daniel Levy will be hoping to attract top talents to White Hart Lane. One of the club’s prime targets summer is LOSC Lille midfielder Angel Gomes.

Spurs were reportedly leading the race for the signing of Angel Gomes earlier this month. The diminutive midfielder recently revealed that he is set to leave LOSC Lille at the end of the season. His contract expires in June, so the 24-year-old will exit the French club on a free transfer.
Given he is set to become a free agent, Gomes has been attracting interest from clubs across Europe. According to an exclusive report from GIVEMESPORT, Marseille could prove to be Tottenham’s biggest competitors to secure the England international’s signature. The Ligue 1 club, managed by Roberto de Zerbi, have tabled a strong offer in a last-gasp attempt to convince him to continue his career in France.
Marseille have finished runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 this season and will play in the Champions League next term, just like Tottenham. As a result, Stade Velodrome could also be deemed an attractive destination for some high-profile players who want to play in Europe’s elite competition. And their interest in Gomes is a setback for Spurs.

However, the aforementioned report adds that the Hotspur Way chiefs remain internally confident that they have laid a strong groundwork to see off competition for the Lille star. They are remaining patient in their pursuit of the ex-Manchester United academy talent, hoping their work to convince him to join Spurs since January pays off despite Marseille’s attempts to pluck him on a potential free transfer.

Admired for his technical ability and versatility, Gomes would be a smart acquisition for a Tottenham side in need of more creativity and flair from the middle of the park. He’d complement midfield talents such as Lucas Bergvall, James Maddison, Pape Matar Sarr and Archie Gray, whilst improving the quality of their squad depth. And the Champions League qualification now could prove to be a game-changer for the Lilywhites in the pursuit of the Edmonton native.
As Marseille are trying their best to snap him up from Lille next month, Tottenham’s calm and composed approach shows they have done their bit in terms of efforts to sign Gomes.
