Cristian Romero is ready to swap Tottenham for Atletico Madrid in the summer

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has become a prominent figure in the dressing room since arriving from Atalanta in 2022. The Argentina international has quickly become a mainstay at N17 and he has been one of the first names on the team-sheet for the Lilywhites in recent seasons. It is clear to see that the North London club play better when the 27-year-old is starting games in the heart of the defence.

But the recent sacking of Ange Postecoglou has caused a massive stir in the dressing room. It was reported earlier this week that many players were left frustrated with the club’s decision to relieve Big Ange from his duties at Hotspur Way. One of the key players that has not taken the decision well is Romero. The centre-back has never backed down from publicly supporting the Australian tactician.

So there no surprise that the decision to sack the ex-Celtic boss may have not gone down well with the Spurs No.17. The pair were constantly supporting each other in front of the media and it is believed that Ange Postecoglou played a big part in maintaining harmony in the team despite the constant media scrutiny week in week out.

A massive squad overhaul is needed at Tottenham in the summer following the Europa League success last month. The Lilywhites need to bring in new signings for next season as they look to compete in the Champions League. However, Spurs will first need to cash in on some key players in the coming weeks to afford new arrivals. One of the players that is linked with a summer move is Cristian Romero.

It was reported earlier that Romero wants to head for pastures new in the summer following a successful stint in North London. The Argentina international has also gone on to admit in an interview that he wants to play in Spain in the future. This has prompted Atletico Madrid to take serious interest in landing the 27-year-old in the summer.

Now, the Spanish giants have received a massive boost in their efforts to land the centre-back in the coming weeks. As per Mundo Deportivo, Cristian Romero is furious with Tottenham’s decision to sack Ange Postecoglou and wants to leave the club immediately. The Argentina international has already given the green signal to Atleti, considering the financial valuation for the 27-year-old is met. The aforementioned report suggests that Spurs are asking for around €70m to let the centre-back go.

The Lilywhites are prepared to lose Romero in the summer and have already lined up potential replacements in case the 27-year-old leaves N17. It was reported earlier that Spurs are interested in landing Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite for next season. Daniel Levy views the England international as the ideal replacement of Romero. However, a deal to land the prolific centre-back looks tricky as the Toffees are keen to retain Branthwaite for now.
