Tottenham considering move for Borussia Monchengladbach star impressing at U-21 European Championship

Borussia Monchengladbach left-back Lukas Ullrich has emerged on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur are entering a new era following the appointment of Thomas Frank as Ange Postecoglou’s successor, and there remains determination to bolster the squad in the aftermath of winning the Europa League last month.
Spurs’ first signing under Thomas Frank is all but set to be confirmed in the coming days. Japanese youngster Kota Takai is set to join the Dane’s squad after the North London club agreed a £5million deal with J-League side Kawasaki Frontale for his services earlier this week.
Given Tottenham were all over the place defensively last season, making Kevin Danso’s loan deal from RC Lens permanent and moving to sign the highly-regarded Kota Takai is a good start. However, centre-back is not the only position that came under huge scrutiny. The full-backs were also exposed and it was clear that an upgrade was required, considering how much Frank is reliant on them in his system.

As Pedro Porro and Djed Spence will fight for the right-back spot next term, Sergio Reguilon’s release means Destiny Udogie is now the only natural left-back available at Frank’s disposal. Now, Spurs are planning to land another left-back to replace Reguilon in the squad.
According to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham are battling Leeds United for the signing of Borussia Monchengladbach left-back Lukas Ullrich. Both the Premier League clubs are closely monitoring his situation at the Bundesliga club.
Lukas Ullrich moved to Borussia Monchengladbach on a free transfer from Hertha Berlin in 2023. He enjoyed his breakout season at Borussia Monchengladbach this past season, registering three goal contributions in 26 Bundesliga appearances.
The left-back’s impressive displays has led to him being called up to the Germany squad for the European Under-21 Championships, where he is currently demonstrating his talent. The youngster played 90 minutes and supplied an assist in Germany’s 2-1 win over England in the group stage last week.

The aforementioned report adds Gladbach have initiated talks over a new contract with Ullrich’s camp with just two years left on his existing deal. The Bundesliga outfit are wary of growing interest in the defender from England, from where Crystal Palace, Everton, Brighton and Nottingham Forest are also keeping tabs on the Germany youth international.
Junior Firpo’s contract is set to expire at Elland Road and he will leave on a free transfer, prompting newly-promoted Leeds United to hunt for a new left-back. They are keen on signing Ullrich, but face competition from Tottenham. Spurs simply cannot enter the new season with just one left-back in Udogie, although Archie Gray showed last season that he can operate in that position.

At 21, Ullrich perfectly aligns with Tottenham’s recruitment model of signing young, exciting talent with high potential. The German would be a good option to arrive at White Hart Lane and compete with Udogie for a spot in Frank’s XI. Gladbach are trying their best to secure his future with a new contract, but if Spurs hold a genuine interest in him, Daniel Levy must quickly table an offer for Ullrich with Leeds also monitoring.
