Tottenham scouts monitoring impressive 20-year-old Mainz ace – Report

Mainz striker Nelson Weiper has emerged as a target for Tottenham after an impressive European Under-21 Championships
In recent years, Tottenham Hotspur have focused investing in youth and moving towards a sustainable model rather than throwing cash at established players. Now, fans will be excited to see how Thomas Frank goes about his business in his first transfer window as new Spurs boss.
The Dane did a fantastic job during his seven-year spell at Brentford, helping them gain promotion a few years ago before establishing themselves as a mid-table outfit in the Premier League. The most impressive thing about him was the way he built the squad on a shoestring budget and developed players at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Thomas Frank is a man full of confidence, and wants to make the Lilywhites ‘serial winners’ after the club ended its long trophy drought last season. And the right way to start doing that would be to help the club continue its youth-driven transfer strategy and rebuild the squad that he inherited from Ange Postecoglou.

Now, according to an exclusive report from The Sun, Tottenham scouts have been closely monitoring Mainz striker Nelson Weiper following his exploits at the recently concluded European Under-21 Championships. Brentford and West Ham United officials are also interested, while Serie A side Como are lining up a potential bid for the youngster.
Nelson Weiper was making waves with his performances in the Euro Under-21 Championship in Slovakia, where he netted four goals in six games. He was instrumental in helping Germany reach the final against England, although they lost 3-2. The lanky targetman gave a glimpse of his aerial prowess at a big stage by scoring a bullet header in the first half against England to get Germany back in the game. However, it was not enough as Jonathan Rowe came off the bench and became England’s hero by scoring in extra time.
Nonetheless, the tournament was enough to get Weiper’s name on the radar of several clubs. The 20-year-old had entered the Euro Under-21s off the back of his breakout Bundesliga season, where he netted three goals and supplied two assists in 23 appearances. The German starlet is likely cost around £12million, with Mainz likely to push for add-ons in any deal to ensure they receive more cash if he goes on to play for the senior national team, adds the report.

At 20, Weiper would fit the mould of signings Tottenham have been making in recent years. Tall, strong in the air and with impressive hold-up play, he’d provide a different dimension than Dominic Solanke to the Spurs attack. However, he is very young and in the developmental phase of his career, so even if our club ends up signing the Mainz man, it would be unjust to expect him to hit the ground running in the new surroundings.
So, in addition to Weiper, Daniel Levy must look to bring in an experienced striker as a potential replacement for Richarlison, whose exit has been greenlighted by Frank this summer.
