Two Tottenham midfield stars will be allowed to leave if they don’t agree to new contracts

Date:

Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur have entered the final year of their contracts at Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur wrapped up the £55million acquisition of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United on Thursday and, with preparations being made for the 2025/26 campaign that will involve Champions League adventure, chairman Daniel Levy has given the green light to negotiate further big-money deals.

Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White was on course to become the next signing for Spurs with a medical pencilled in on Friday, only for it be put on a standby after the Tricky Trees lodged a formal complaint against the North Londoners’ ‘illegal’ pursuit of the player. Apart from Gibbs-White, Juventus outcast Douglas Luiz is also firmly on Tottenham’s radar.

Recent reports suggest Douglas Luiz would ‘love’ to sign for the Lilywhites after an underwhelming first season with Juventus. The Serie A side are planning a midfield revamp as they prepare for the 2025/26 season, and that involves moving on the Brazilian midfielder this summer.

However, Spurs are currently stocked in central midfield, with a couple of players into the final years of their contracts. Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur are among those.

Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur could be moved on

Both Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur face uncertain futures at White Hart Lane. The duo were inconsistent last season, and with youngsters like Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr performing well, they enjoyed limited game time under former boss Ange Postecoglou.

Now, according to a report from The Times, Tottenham could allow Bissouma and Bentancur to leave this summer if they cannot be tied down to new deals.

Bissouma has been with Spurs since arriving from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2022, while Bentancur joined the club a year before from Juventus. The Malian international has been hit and miss across three seasons in North London, failing to cement a regular place in midfield. There has been no shortage of suitors, though, with Juventus the latest club to show an interest in the 28-year-old.

Tottenham Hotspur will move on Rodrigo Bentancur if he fails to agree on a new contract

As for Bentancur, the Uruguayan international’s time at the club has been mostly ravaged by injuries. He had arrived in England as a promising midfielder from Juventus, but persistent injury problems have not allowed the South American to take his game to the next level.

If the midfield duo do not agree to new deals, the club bosses want to move them on to free up space in the squad for fresh blood. Bissouma, in particular, appears to be the likeliest as he has been attracting interest from European clubs in stark contrast to Bentancur, who has not been concretely linked to a club this summer.

It remains to be seen what happens with the two Spurs midfielders this month.
