Ex-Spurs scout hints Ange Postecoglou may return for Tottenham players in January, with Dominic Solanke emerging as a possible target
It has been a tumultuous few months for Tottenham Hotspur. Ange Postecoglou’s tenure ended in June 2025, and the end came dramatically as he led the club to their first trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League. However, Tottenham performed poorly on the domestic front and finished 17th in the Premier League table. This poor result forced the club to let Postecoglou go just 16 days after he won the trophy. Earlier in his career, he had led Celtic to back-to-back titles. Meanwhile, reports revealed that Tottenham are planning a move for Harry Grey, and the news has left many fans curious as the club looks to revamp the squad.
Postecoglou’s new plans and Solanke’s position:
Meanwhile, the former Spurs manager took over the role of manager at Nottingham Forest in September. After this development, former Spurs scout Bryan King, while speaking to Tottenham News, has revealed that the Australian manager might look at some of his former players at Tottenham who are not getting consistent game time.
King feels that Dominic Solanke is one of them, and Postecoglou might look to sign the striker in January 2026. If the English striker does not get consistent playing time at Tottenham, he will need it in some other club to stake his claim on a spot in the World Cup 2026 squad. Hence, the January transfer window will be important for the 28-year-old striker.
“I think Postecoglou will look at Spurs’ squad. He’ll be looking at anyone who isn’t getting regular games, that’s for sure. Maybe somebody like Solanke could be of interest to him.
“If he’s not going to be in the starting XI for Spurs, he needs games to get back in the England team. He must have an eye on the World Cup next summer, and if he isn’t playing regularly, then he won’t go.”
How Tottenham should decide on Solanke:

If Nottingham Forest make a move for Solanke in January, Tottenham should avoid a direct sale. They bought the striker from Bournemouth for a whopping £65 million, and despite injuries and inconsistent goalscoring, he can still be an asset to the team. Tottenham already have limited attacking options after the departure of Son Heung-min, so selling Solanke now would be too early. The club should help him recover from his injury, restore his confidence and allow Thomas Frank to integrate his game more deeply into the system. Frank greatly appreciates his hold-up play and pressing, which fits in with his high-pressing style.
However, inconsistency in goalscoring has been a problem, so Frank should focus on creating more chances for him and encourage him to trust his instincts in the box. Looking at the statistics, Solanke has scored nine goals and provided three assists in 27 Premier League games in 2024/25, while also making some important contributions in the Europa League and EFL Cup. This performance may be considered low for his price and prospects, but his hard work and versatility convince Tottenham that letting him go altogether would be the wrong option.
What is the practical solution?
Still, a season-long loan deal could be a practical solution. It would give him a chance to play regularly, regain confidence and benefit Tottenham’s long-term plans. In a loan situation, the club could also reduce his salary burden a bit and ensure that he comes back stronger. Frank’s role here will be crucial as he will need to monitor Solanke’s progress closely at Nottingham Forest and ensure that Solanke is used effectively. Meanwhile, reports have revealed that Real Madrid eye Micky van de Ven swoop in 2026, and this news has further alerted Tottenham supporters as the club cannot afford to lose their key defender. Tottenham must make a balanced decision and keep the bigger picture in mind when deciding Solanke’s future.
