PL rivals rule out January exit for Tottenham target; Will Spurs make their move?

Date:

Bournemouth unwilling to allow Tottenham target Antoine Semenyo to depart the club in the January transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur’s emphasis was on reinforcing the attacking unit in the past summer transfer window. This was evidenced by the signings of Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani, in addition to turning Mathys Tel’s loan move permanent from Bayern Munich.

Not to everyone’s surprise, the north Londoners were keen on bringing in a new left-winger that could compete with Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert for a spot in the first XI. With Son Heung-min announcing his departure from N17 and joining MLS side Los Angeles FC last month, there was an urgent need to address the issue before the season commenced.

To address that issue, Spurs were trying their best to land Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo. Tottenham made phone calls to discover whether they could make a move to sign the Ghanaian international in the final days of the summer transfer window, as Thomas Frank wanted another forward. There were no offers tabled for the Bournemouth winger and Spurs eventually ended up signing Randal Kolo Muani on a season-long loan from Juventus on deadline day.

Bournemouth not willing to listen to offers for Antoine Semenyo in January

According to a report from Football Insider, Bournemouth are not willing to listen to offers for Semenyo in January. Instead, they are readying themselves for heavy interest in the 25-year-old next summer and expect it to be difficult to hold onto their key asset.

The Ghana ace was subject of intense transfer interest earlier this summer, after an impressive 2024/25 campaign for Andoni Iraola’s side. He netted 11 goals and five assists in 37 Premier League appearances, as Bournemouth enjoyed a strong last season. Semenyo has been in rollicking form since the start of this season, bagging three goals and two assists in four appearances.

This has piqued the interest of several clubs across the Premier League, although one aspect that works in the favour of the Iraola-managed outfit is that the player agreed a new improved contract at the Vitality Stadium until the summer of 2030 in July. This means Bournemouth can ask for a premium fee.

The Cherries have started very well in the Premier League, sitting fourth in the table with three wins from four games. And as they do not need any immediate move, meaning any exit for Semenyo will be blocked in January, adds the report.

Thomas Frank’s Tottenham have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Antoine Semenyo

Blow for Tottenham?

It is easy to understand why Frank was so keen to get Semenyo on his side. After Son’s exit, the Lilywhites naturally needed another disruptive winger to make their attack more unpredictable. Semenyo emerged as a natural target for them, especially with the speed, flair, ability to break defensive lines, and finishing that he has shown in the last few years in the Premier League.

Given how vital he is to Iraola’s system and the new contract he signed at the Vitality Stadium until 2030, it looks improbable for Spurs to spend a fortune in the New Year on his services. If the need for a left-winger emerges mid-season, they will have to look elsewhere.
