Tottenham told to find the right loan move for academy starlet Dane Scarlett to help him resurrect his career
Tottenham Hotspur allowed plenty of players to depart on loan during the summer transfer window. Most of them were academy products, as Thomas Frank and the club chiefs carefully selected clubs for their development.
Luka Vuskovic has found home at HSV Hamburger, quickly becoming a key cog in their defensive unit. Yang Min-hyeok, after a slow start to life at Portsmouth, has earned three consecutive starts and scored two goals. The South Korean winger netted the winner for Portsmouth against Middlesbrough at the weekend and subsequently earned the praise of his manager John Mousinho.
Spurs must be happy with the development of many youngsters out on loan. However, one academy talent who did not go out on loan was Dane Scarlett. The striker was granted permission to miss Tottenham’s pre-season tour of Asia in the summer to explore his potential loan destinations, but nothing materialised. He has oscillated between being a part of Thomas Frank’s squad and the Under-21s.
John Wenham thinks Dane Scarlett still has time on his side to kickstart his career
Dane Scarlett is still trying his best to kickstart his career at Tottenham. He spent the first half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Oxford United before being recalled by Tottenham. It was yet another testing loan spell for the Englishman, who has struggled to demonstrate his potential with several clubs now.
While many fans may have given up on the 21-year-old following his disappointing loan spells with Ipswich Town and Oxford United, there are still high hopes for the player in N17. Well, at least, in the eyes of reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham as he feels Scarlett requires the right loan move to resurrect his career.
“Age is on his side,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“I’ve seen Scarlett over several years and been highly impressed by him whenever I’ve seen him. There’s no youth player to date who could head a ball as well as he can that I’ve seen.
“He just desperately needs the right loan. So, I hope that in January a loan can be found for him, where he can be the main man or wherever the club he’s going to can provide him with a lot of service, because if you supply him with service, he will score a lot of goals.”
Tottenham have to show more patience with Scarlett
There have been plenty of instances where it has taken time for youngsters to kickstart their respective careers. And Harry Kane’s development after coming through Tottenham’s youth ranks is the classic example. He had to go out on loan to clubs such as Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City before breaking into the senior Spurs side. And once the Englishman did, there was no looking back.
Kane has managed to carve out a fantastic career, becoming a Tottenham legend and stands as the club’s highest goalscorer with 280 strikes in 435 appearances. The Lilywhites only managed to enjoy the England international’s rise as a player after they persisted and backed him fully. Such strong support is also expected when it comes to Scarlett, who Jose Mourinho hailed as the next big thing in the Premier League back in 2021.
Come January, Frank and the Hotspur Way chiefs must find a loan home for Scarlett to help him get regular minutes on the pitch and resurrect his career. A strong loan spell in the lower tiers of English football may just click and help him get back his confidence, who knows?
