Tottenham are refusing to rule out the possibility of recalling Luka Vuskovic on a season-long loan from HSV Hamburger
Tottenham Hotspur youngster Luka Vuskovic has enjoyed a fantastic start to life on loan at Bundesliga club HSV Hamburger.
The teenager officially joined Spurs earlier in July having agreed a deal to sign for the club back in 2023 from Hajduk Split. And having joined HSV Hamburger on loan for the campaign, the youngster is already proving why there is so much hype around him.
Luka Vuskovic, who was fortunate to not fracture his fingers last month after angrily hitting the post, completed the full 90 minutes in each of his four appearances in a Hamburg shirt so far. The towering centre-back’s impressive form has helped Hamburg tighten up defensively, with back-to-back clean sheets against Union Berlin and Mainz.
Tottenham are considering Luka Vuskovic recall in January
In Hamburg’s goalless draw with Union Berlin, Vuskovic became the first player in over five seasons to win 18 aerial duels in a single game in Europe’s top five leagues. Tottenham officials are keeping regular checks on the Croatian international, as they generally do with all their loan players, and they were in attendance at the weekend to watch him essay a starring role in Hamburg’s 4-0 thrashing of Mainz.
Now, according to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham could decide to recall Vuskovic from loan in January and simultaneously also invest in a central defender. Thomas Frank wants a centre-back in the New Year, and the Lilywhites are working to find options.
“Vuskovic is doing very well, and at just 18, many scouts and clubs think he is one of the best young centre-backs in Europe,” reveals TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey.
“Speaking to sources close to the club, they acknowledge there is a clause that could see him return in January. Could we see Vuskovic come back and then wait until the summer? I would not rule it out.”

Spurs must not cut short Vuskovic’s loan at Hamburg
Vuskovic has been showing his potential in the Bundesliga and performing consistently for Hamburg, with German media nicknaming him ‘Air Vuskovic’ for his dominant ability in the air. Over the summer, the lanky centre-back had several clubs after him, and it’s no wonder following his fantastic start to life in Germany.
Tottenham do have the recall option in Vuskovic’s loan but they must not use it if they end up signing a centre-back in January, which Frank wants. Regardless of not investing in a new centre-back, there is no point cutting short the Croat’s loan spell at Hamburg and hampering his development, unless there is an injury crisis at Tottenham or a bigger club from the Bundesliga or any European league wants his services for the second half of the season.
The Lilywhites must allow the 18-year-old to play regularly and continue his development at Volksparkstadion for the entire season.
