Fabrizio Romano reveals Joao Palhinha wants to sign for Tottenham permanently after impressive loan spell so far

Joao Palhinha’s move to Tottenham Hotspur has given him the spark he was missing at Bayern Munich.

The defensive midfielder joined Spurs on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich with a €30 million buy option, and he has not taken much time to make an impact. The Portugal international has effectively filled a long-standing gap in the Lilywhites’ midfield, giving steel, balance and experience that they have been missing. Not only that, but he is also showcasing a different dynamic to his game by making a regular impact in the final third, as evidenced by three goals in 11 appearances.

Joao Palhinha is playing with a renewed sense of confidence in a Tottenham shirt. The 30-year-old’s performance levels and impact have unsurprisingly gone unnoticed, with former England goalkeeper Joe Hart labelling him as a “top signing”. Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King has urged the Europa League champions to trigger the €30 million buy option as quickly as possible. Such has been his influence in N17, with Tottenham already planning to sign him permanently from Bayern.

Fabrizio Romano gives an update on Joao Palhinha’s future at Spurs

Palhinha has been among the standout performers for Tottenham so far this season, and Thomas Frank is “very happy” with his displays. The midfield enforcer’s decision to leave Vincent Kompany’s Bayern and join Spurs on loan has proven to be the right one, and it could lead to a permanent transfer.

Reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano has now given an update on Palhinha’s future at Tottenham following his impressive start to the season. He has also revealed whether the player is likely to extend his stay at White Hart Lane beyond his loan.

“I think there is a good chance of seeing Palhinha staying at Tottenham in 2026. Then let’s see if it’s going to be via the option, or maybe they want to re-negotiate with Bayern. It’s too early to say, still at the beginning of October, so many months to go before they make any decision,” Fabrizio Romano said on Market Madness Podcast.

“But internally, the feeling is very positive. Palhinha is happy at Tottenham, and Thomas Frank and Tottenham are also very happy with him. So it’s a very, very good deal for all parties involved. And now it’s going to be about the agreement with Bayern in 2026, again, it’s still early, so let’s see how the season will go.”

“But the start of this loan deal has been positive, and all parties are more than happy to continue together. So I would be quite optimistic on that one, but again it’s still a long season and we have to see what’s going to happen next.”

Palhinha permanent transfer is a no-brainer

Palhinha has quickly become one of the first names on Frank’s teamsheet, adapting to his tactics and system at Tottenham like a duck to water. The Portuguese star is one of the gaffer’s most used players, along with Guglielmo Vicario, Pedro Porro, Djed Spence and Richarlison, which speaks volumes of Frank’s trust in him.

As far as Palhinha is concerned, he also wants to stay with the north Londoners beyond his loan spell. In reality, he’d be happy the Frank-led club take up the buy option as ex-Fulham star wants to stay in the Premier League beyond his loan spell. And if the tough-tackling midfielder continues performing with the same levels of consistency, Tottenham’s decision to sign him permanently from Bayern will only become a matter of not if but when.
