Xavi Simons is looking to prove his worth at Tottenham this season
Tottenham stunned the football world this summer by securing the signing of Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig on a long-term deal. The Dutch attacker had been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea for most of the transfer window and had even agreed personal terms with the Blues. However, the deal collapsed at the final stage, allowing the Lilywhites to swoop in and complete a sensational move for one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
It is fair to say that Spurs pulled off a major coup by landing Simons towards the business end of the transfer window. The 22-year-old has long been regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in European football, and many at Tottenham believe he has the potential to develop into a world-class player under Thomas Frank. His arrival also generated immense excitement around Hotspur Way, with several players asking club staff for updates on the Dutchman’s signing.

However, the onus is now on Simons to prove his worth in the Premier League and establish himself as a key figure at N17. The Dutchman has endured a somewhat slow start to life in north London, registering one assist in his first eight appearances. That said, his limited output can largely be attributed to Frank’s tactical set-up. The manager has often deployed him on the left wing rather than in his preferred No. 10 role, where he is at his creative best.
Tottenham star Xavi Simons did not leave RB Leipzig on the best terms in the summer
It had become increasingly clear that Simons had outgrown RB Leipzig well before his move to Tottenham was finalised. The Bundesliga side endured a disappointing domestic campaign last season, missing out on European qualification altogether. That failure proved to be the final straw for the young midfielder, who sought a fresh challenge and the opportunity to test himself against elite opposition in the Champions League.
Following his departure, RB Leipzig head coach Ole Werner offered some insight into the situation. Speaking to Sport Bild (via Bulinews), Werner said,
“I was relieved when the transfer window closed. With Xavi, it was clear he’d go – just not when. That was a burden for him, the team, and the environment. It caused unrest. When a key player leaves, it creates space for others to grow. He was a strong character in the team. The restructuring released energy for a fresh start.”
Werner’s comments reflect a sense of relief at the conclusion of Simons’ transfer saga, which had reportedly caused tension and unrest within the Leipzig camp. While understandable from the club’s perspective, it also suggests that Simons could have handled his exit with greater professionalism and patience.
Now, the focus must shift firmly to his future at Tottenham. Simons chose to join the Lilywhites with the aim of working under Thomas Frank and taking his game to the next level. The Danish manager’s track record of developing young players makes Spurs an ideal environment for the Dutchman to refine his craft and fulfil his immense potential.
