Ange Postecoglou etched his name into Tottenham Hotspur’s history books after ending the trophy-drought last season
Tottenham, against all odds, ended their disastrous campaign on a high note under Ange Postecoglou last season. The Lilywhites just could not find any rhythm in the Premier League, with the North London club finishing the season just a place above the relegation zone. They also registered 22 losses in the league whilst securing their lowest-ever points tally for the season.
Yet, none of it mattered when Spurs ended their 17-year wait for a major trophy in May. The Lilywhites managed to pull off a miracle by winning the Europa League against Manchester United in the final. Their performance was up to the mark and not a single player failed to deliver when it mattered the most. Staying true to his word, Big Ange fulfilled his promise of bringing silverware back to N17 in his second season.

However, despite the Europa League success, the Australian tactician’s time at N17 came to an abrupt end shortly after the trophy parade. The ex-Celtic boss has promised during the trophy parade that his third season at N17 would be better than the second. But Levy thought otherwise, and ended up relieving Big Ange from his duties in the summer.
Ange Postecoglou is a Tottenham legend following the UEL success
In hindsight, it seems as though Ange Postecoglou pulled off a miracle by bringing silverware back to N17 last season. Faced with a mounting injury crisis and a lack of squad depth, he made the gutsy call to prioritise the Europa League over the Premier League midway through the campaign. It was a huge gamble, but one that paid off spectacularly as Spurs ended their long-standing trophy drought.
Tim Sherwood has now urged fans to respect Ange Postecoglou’s achievement and give him his flowers. Speaking on Sky Sports (via X), Sherwood said,
“Ange put all his eggs in one basket to win the Europa League, which he actually did. And there should be a statue of him outside of Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Load of managers have come and gone and never been able to win. The manager decided that he wouldn’t be able to compete on all fronts.”
The ex-PL manager added,
“So he put all his eggs in the Europa League basket and almost discarded the Premier League, whether it’s right or wrong. I think it was right, because at the end of the day, there was an open top bus parade around Tottenham. All them fans had a day out to remember.”
Tim Sherwood’s comments underline the magnitude of Ange Postecoglou’s accomplishment. Winning a European trophy, especially in the face of adversity, was something no Tottenham manager had achieved for a long time. Sherwood believes the Australian tactician deserves immense credit for giving Spurs supporters a moment they had waited nearly two decades for.
Ange Postecoglou recently came out and said that he knew he was getting sacked before the Europa League final took place. This makes the achievement even more special as it helped him etch his name in the North London club’s history books. He is now one of the three managers in Tottenham’s long history to have won a European trophy…. and for that, he deserves respect.
