Manchester United threaten to beat Tottenham Hotspur to Morten Hjulmand in January
The January transfer window presents a golden opportunity for Tottenham to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season under Thomas Frank. The Lilywhites currently sit just one point outside the Premier League’s top four following a 1–2 home defeat to Aston Villa. Now, the North London club must address their midfield shortcomings if they are to close the gap on their rivals in the coming months.
Spurs urgently need to recruit a midfielder who can provide reliable cover for João Palhinha in the centre of the park. At present, the Portuguese international has been anchoring the midfield superbly, offering defensive stability, shielding the backline, and contributing effectively in the attacking third. However, if Tottenham hope to compete across all four fronts this season, they will need greater depth and support in the No.6 role.

The recent defeat to Aston Villa exposed some of the key weaknesses in Spurs’ midfield. The lack of proactive defending in central areas allowed the visitors to score twice from long range through Morgan Rogers and Emi Buendia. It was a clear reminder that Tottenham need a midfielder capable of covering ground quickly and pressing with intensity when out of possession.
Tottenham might miss out on Sporting midfielder Morten Hjulmand in January
According to recent reports, Tottenham are interested in signing Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand during the January transfer window. The Danish international is reportedly open to a move midway through the season as he looks to take his game to the next level. Thomas Frank is said to be unsatisfied with his current midfield depth and is eager to bring the 26-year-old to N17.
However, the Lilywhites are not alone in their pursuit. As per TEAMtalk, Manchester United are also keen on signing Hjulmand in January. The report adds that Ruben Amorim is eager to reunite with the Danish midfielder and that the Red Devils are “optimistic” about securing his signature for around £50 million.
If Manchester United’s interest is genuine, Spurs will need to act decisively to lure Hjulmand to North London. The player may be tempted by a move to Old Trafford due to his previous working relationship with Amorim. Nevertheless, Tottenham could still have the upper hand if they can offer him regular game time and the opportunity to become a key figure in Thomas Frank’s project at N17.
Signing a player of Hjulmand’s calibre should be a no-brainer for Spurs, especially if Yves Bissouma is heading for the exit doors in the coming months. The Sporting CP midfielder has taken huge strides since making the switch to Portugal in 2023. And it is fair to say that he would be a perfect fit for Thomas Frank’s system. His ability to read the game, dictate tempo, and lead from the front makes him an ideal fit for Frank’s tactical system and a potentially transformative addition for Tottenham this January.
