Boca Juniors president views Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur as a ‘dream’ signing in January 2026
Tottenham Hotspur are planning for the January transfer window, as Thomas Frank aims to improve the squad further for a strong second half of the campaign. They were eliminated from the Carabao Cup in midweek but still have three competitions to compete in.
Thomas Frank has persisted with the Rodrigo Bentancur-Joao Palhinha partnership in midfield, even though certain sections of the fanbase feel that it leaves the team short of creativity from deeper areas.
Joao Palhinha has been impressive since arriving on loan from Bayern Munich in the summer, becoming a mainstay in Thomas Frank’s first XI. The Portuguese’s presence has seemingly improved the game of Rodrigo Bentancur, who is starting to show consistency in a Spurs shirt. The Uruguayan had entered the final year of his contract, but his growing importance under Frank led to the club handing him an improved deal in September. Yet, over recent days, he has emerged as a target for one club.

Boca Juniors want to re-sign Rodrigo Bentancur
According to a report from El Intransigente, Boca Juniors have set their sights on bringing Bentancur back to the club. The Tottenham star is considered as a ‘dream’ signing for Boca Juniors, as president Juan Roman Riquelme wants to strengthen the squad in 2026 with quality and experience.
Bentancur came through Boca Juniors’ youth ranks and played a couple of seasons in their first team, before joining Juventus in 2017. He spent nearly four and a half years with Juventus before Spurs signed him in January 2022.
The report adds Riquelme views Bentancur as the ideal man to partner alongside Leandro Paredes at Boca next season, although he is aware that signing the Uruguayan would be ‘practically impossible’.

No move happening for Bentancur
Bentancur has been one of the most important players in Frank’s side and he recently penned a new contract, securing his future at N17 beyond 2026. The midfielder continues to be heavily involved in the current campaign, starting eight out of 10 league games thus far.
At 28, the South American is approaching the best years of his career, and Tottenham did well to tie him down to a new deal. This makes it very difficult for Boca to re-sign the midfielder in January 2026, potentially leaving it as a dream unfulfilled for Riquelme.
