Thomas Frank confirms Tottenham Hotspur star Lucas Bergvall suffered a concussion against Chelsea
Tottenham Hotspur were defeated 1-0 by Chelsea on Saturday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It was a dull performance from the homeside, who looked like a shadow of themselves, and failed to create attacking threats. Spurs registered just 1 attempt on goal and recorded an expected goals (xG) figure of 0.05, the lowest in Premier League records.
Early in the game, teenage midfielder Lucas Bergvall blocked Enzo Fernández’s close-range volley, taking the full impact on his head. The collision caused Bergvall to lose his balance and fall to the ground. After being assessed by Tottenham’s medical staff, Thomas Frank substituted the young Swede as a concussion precaution and brought on Xavi Simons. Bergvall, who wanted to continue playing, went straight down the tunnel. Simons showcased another lacklustre display and was substituted in the second half for Wilson Odobert.
Bergvall joined Spurs in 2024 and made an instant impact at the club. His composure on the ball combined with his ball-retention ability has earned him a place in Tottenham’s senior squad.

After the game, Thomas Frank shared an update on Bergvall’s injury, confirming that he had suffered a concussion. He praised Spurs’ medical staff for taking quick action and making the right call. Speaking to the media, Frank said (h/t The Standard):
“That was a concussion. So he totally couldn’t stay on and I think the medical team did a good job in that aspect.”
“Of course, we would have loved to have him continue. That’s why we picked him in the starting XI. Unfortunately, that couldn’t happen. So others will step in. Xavi knew the game plan.”
Bergvall has been in solid form this season, and also scored a sensational header in Spurs’ 3-0 thrashing of West Ham in September. Due to his impressive performance this year, he has been nominated for the 2025 Golden Boy award alongside teammate Archie Gray.
Injuries piling up at N17
Bergvall’s blow adds to Spurs’ endless list of injuries this season. Other key players like Dominic Solanke, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Archie Gray, Ben Davies, and Yves Bissouma remain sidelined.
Spurs have a challenging list of fixtures waiting for them. They first host Copenhagen on Tuesday in the Champions League before facing Manchester United in the Premier League. After that, they travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on league leaders Arsenal, followed by a trip to Paris to face PSG in the Champions League.
Tottenham are rumored to be in the market for a new attacker in January, with Kevin Schade and Igor Thiago among their primary targets. After selling Son Heung-min last summer and facing several injuries, Tottenham needs to reinforce its squad once the transfer window re-opens in winter.
