Tottenham Hotspur leading the race for Chelsea star Willian
Tottenham Hotspur are the favourites to sign Willian from Chelsea this summer, despite rivals Arsenal making a contract offer for the Brazilian. This is according to a report from the Daily Star.
Willian is set to become a free agent in a few months with his contract with Chelsea on the verge of expiry. Negotiations over a new deal haven’t gone according to plans, as the club and the player haven’t been able to agree upon the length of the new contract (h/t Daily Star).
This has led to speculations surrounding Willian’s future at Stamford Bridge, with a number of clubs taking note of his situation. Tottenham are one of the interested parties, along with our bitter rivals Arsenal (h/t Daily Star).
The report states that Arsenal have already made a two-year contract offer for the Brazilian international. However, despite their offer, our club has the edge over the Gunners in the race for Willian. This is due to the fact that Willian enjoys a solid relationship with Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho (h/t Daily Star).
It was the Portuguese tactician who signed the Brazilian at Chelsea back in 2013 and the pair enjoyed a fruitful relationship for close to three years, before Mourinho left Stamford Bridge.
Willian, in a recent interview, opened up on his equation with Mourinho, claiming that he got along very well with our manager and was able to learn a lot under his tutelage. This is likely to give our club the edge in the race to land the Brazilian, according to the report.
Moreover, Willian has already rejected a two-year offer at Chelsea, stating that he wants three years on his new contract. So, there is a strong likelihood that the 31-year-old would go about Arsenal’s offer the same way as well (h/t Daily Star).
