Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust urges club to reverse furlough call

Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust has urged the club to follow in the steps of rivals Liverpool and reverse the decision to put non-playing staff on furlough, according to a report from the Evening Standard.

Last week Tottenham chairman announced that the club would be reducing the salary of 550 non-playing staff by 20%, in some cases by placing them on furlough. The decision was met with widespread criticism from fans and pundits alike, given that the club had posted £70m profits last year (h/t Evening Standard).

Following Tottenham’s announcement, Premier League leaders Liverpool also announced this past weekend that they will be putting staff on furlough due to the coronavirus crisis. However, the Reds too faced a lot of backlash for their decision (h/t Evening Standard).

Following this, the Reds have decided not to go through with the decision and issued an apology for taking the step on Monday (h/t Evening Standard).

And now, Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust (THST) has urged the club to reverse their decision on the matter as well. After Liverpool’s U-turn, THST tweeted Tottenham’s official account to rethink their stance before it damages the reputation of the club any further.

THST has also urged the club release more information on the decision, while saying that Levy and the players, who continued to be paid in full, should contribute to cover the salaries of the non-playing staff (h/t Evening Standard).

Along with Tottenham, Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Norwich City have also furloughed non-playing staff. It remains to be seen if Levy pays heed to THST and fans’ request and decide to reverse their decision on the matter.
