Jan Vertonghen makes his stance clear on Tottenham’s furlough decision
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has seemingly made his stance on the club’s decision to furlough non-playing staff clear with his actions on social media (h/t Football.London).
Last week Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy announced that the club will be placing some of its non-playing staff on furlough, taking advantage of the UK government’s pay-retention scheme to cover 80% of the staff’s salaries. The decision had been met with widespread criticism (h/t The Sun).
Following in Tottenham’s footsteps, Premier League leaders Liverpool also decided to put its non-playing staff on furlough this past weekend. However, after facing huge backlash, the Reds made an U-turn on their decision, announcing on Monday that the club would not be furloughing staff (h/t Football.London).
And Vertonghen seems to have delivered his verdict on the matter, after it appeared that the 32-year-old Belgian international liked a post by BBC Sport that reported the news of Liverpool’s decision (h/t Football.London).
Levy’s decision to place the club’s non-playing staff on furlough hasn’t been a popular one. And it seems as if Vertonghen agrees with that. Following Liverpool’s U-turn on the matter, Tottenham are under pressure to change their decision to furlough non-playing staff (h/t Evening Standard).
