Tottenham Hotspur release apologetic statement after 3 players broke Covid-19 rules
A report by Daily Mail mentions that Tottenham Hotspur have released a statement after 3 of their players broke tier 4 Covid-19 restrictions.
Four Premier League footballers met with their families to spend Christmas together. Out of these, three were from Tottenham Hotspur.
Giovani Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilon and Erik Lamela joined West Ham United’s Manuel Lanzini in the Christmas celebrations. Lanzini is a teammate of Le Celso and Lamela in the Argentina national team.
The photo features 18 people together, including the four Premier League footballers. The government placed London under tier 4 in December. Under the rules, households were not permitted to meet for Christmas celebrations.
This was due to the rising number of coronavirus cases in the United Kingdom, especially in London. The rest of the country could gather with up to 3 households for the festival.
Following the incident, both Tottenham and West Ham issued statements condemning the behaviour of the players. The statement by Spurs states that the club condemns the photo of their players celebrating Christmas together.
“We are extremely disappointed and strongly condemn this image showing some of our players with family and friends together at Christmas.”
The statement also acknowledges the sacrifices made by everyone around the country to not spend the festival with their loved ones.
A friend of theirs posted the photo online, which was supposedly clicked at Lo Celso’s house. While the location of his house was not clear, he has tagged the photo of the same place as ‘London’ elsewhere on his Instagram. (h/t Daily Mail)

Following this photo, Spurs played Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 27. Both Lamela and Reguilon featured for Spurs, while Lo Celso missed out due to injury.
Later, the Premier League match between Spurs and Fulham was postponed just three hours before kick-off.
