Tottenham face Ajax competition for Paul Mukairu
According to the Mirror (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Nigerian youngster Paul Mukairu but are set to face competition from AFC Ajax.
The 21-year-old winger came through the FC Heart youth academy in his homeland Nigeria, before joining Turkish outfit Antalyaspor in 2019. After having made 34 first-team appearances for the club, in which he scored 4 goals, Mukairu joined Belgian outfit RSC Anderlecht on loan last summer.
Since arriving at the club, the 21-year-old has continued his upward progression, bagging a decent return of four goals and assists apiece, in just 21 games in all competitions. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Mukairu’s loan stint with Anderlecht runs out at the end of the ongoing season, post which they do have the option of making his deal permanent. If they do not opt to do so, he will return to Antalyaspor, where he is contracted till the summer of 2024.
But his exploits with Anderlecht this term seemed to have gathered him some new admirers in the form of Tottenham Hotspur as well as Ajax. The report adds that Spurs are confident of landing the young winger in a deal worth just £4m.
However, a representative of Mukairu has now claimed that Ajax are interested in him would be a better fit for the 21-year-old Nigerian.
“Ajax are interested in Paul. He is a highly technical player who will fit the Ajax style. He is not yet the finished article and Ajax would be a great club for him to continue with his development. It will also be a chance for the player to feature in the Champions League season after season.”

Tottenham have plenty of options as it is in wide areas with the likes of Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela, Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwijn. Not to forget youngster Jack Clarke who is out on loan and Dane Scarlett, who is rising through the youth ranks and can play out wide. So, a move for Mukairu may seem unwanted at the moment.
