Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur could hijack Leicester City’s Stefan de Vrij deal
A report by Sunday Star (h/t Express) states that Tottenham Hotspur can enter the transfer race for Stefan de Vrij if Leicester City and Mino Raiola fail to reach an agreement this week.
De Vrij, who is represented by super-agent Raiola, was a big part of Antonio Conte’s Scudetto-winning Inter Milan side last season. But the 29-year-old could be set for a move to the Premier League, with the Foxes keen on a move.
But Spurs can pounce on their failings to make de Vrij their second signing at the back from Serie A this summer. The club has already concluded a deal for Atalanta star, Cristian Romero.
Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy, according to the report, are still working on bringing in Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu. But they can face competition from Arsenal for the 22-year-old Japanese international.
Should Spurs get de Vrij?
Romero’s signing may not be enough to properly solidify Spurs’ backline. Toby Alderweireld has already left the club and that is a spot that the 23-year-old Argentine can fill.
However, Davinson Sanchez, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Japhet Tanganga are also linked with moves away from N17 this summer. In such an event, bringing in new faces would become almost a matter of urgency.
De Vrij would be a quality addition in that regard. At 29, he would be one of the senior figures at the club and his 396 senior appearances for clubs such as Feyenoord, Inter Milan, and SS Lazio only goes on to show his quality and durability.

The club has needed a senior figure at the back ever since Jan Vertonghen left for SL Benfica last year. Alderweireld did a good job but with the former Atletico Madrid defender now at Al-Duhail, de Vrij can be the man to carry on the torch in Spurs’ defence.
