Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur target Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nubel

According to German publication Kicker (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur have identified Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nubel as a transfer target for the near future. He is currently in the first season of a two-year-long loan spell at AS Monaco.

Tottenham have shown an interest in signing Nubel in the summer transfer window and this apparently suggests that Antonio Conte is reluctant to trigger the optional clause to sign Pierluigi Gollini permanently before the end of his loan spell, and that could pave the way for the Bayern ace to move to N17 in the future.

Spurs have previously kept tabs on the German as early as last month. He is currently out on loan until the end of the 2022-23 season, but Bayern could cut short that spell in the future. The keeper initially left Allianz Arena to gain more minutes after failing to displace the legendary Manuel Neuer in-between the sticks.

Nubel in, Gollini out?

The recent extension of Hugo Lloris hints at the club’s trust in the World Cup-winning Frenchman. With the ex-Lyon star now set to stay beyond this summer, our interest in Nubel could then signal the end of the road for Gollini.

Neuer is expected to sign a new deal with the Bavarian side for three more years, which does not bode well for the loanee and his future prospects. Neuer, who was placed third in the 2014 Ballon d’Or, has shown no signs of slowing down for club and country.

Lloris would pose a similar obstacle in London but it is important to note that the France international’s contract expires in 2024 and that he will turn 36 this year. In that regard, Nubel could well challenge for the first-team spot in the near future if he comes to N17.

Moreover, Lloris had a mixed showing against Wolverhampton Wanderers which directly resulted in a 2-0 defeat. It would be reactionary to think that the skipper has started to decline just because of a couple of errors after a solid spell at the start of this season. However, it is always good to have a quality backup who can challenge him for the number one spot.

Competition like that can really turn around a player’s form. Dean Henderson’s return from Sheffield United has been followed by a sharp upturn in David de Gea’s form while Kepa Arrizabalaga also showed his quality in Edouard Mendy’s absence for Chelsea in the past few weeks.

Nubel, at 25, is of a good age profile and could be the man to challenge, and eventually displace, Lloris from the number 1 spot that he has held ever since his move from Ligue 1.
