Transfer News: Benfica slap price tag on Darwin Nunez amidst Tottenham Hotspur interest
According to the Portuguese publication O Jogo [Print Edition] via Sport Witness (h/t The Express), Benfica have slapped a massive price tag on Darwin Nunez as Tottenham Hotspur are interested in securing his signature ahead of the summer transfer window. He has been in terrific form throughout this season and was crucial in helping his side qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals.
Nunez’s attacking prowess has not gone unnoticed, with Tottenham keeping tabs on him right now. They are not alone as Arsenal are monitoring his current situation as they look to prise him away from their bitter rivals. West Ham United tried to sign him in January, but the Portuguese side had rejected their £60million transfer bid.
With more clubs entering the transfer race, Nelson Verissimo’s side have set a valuation of £68million for the Uruguayan’s signature. They are looking to take advantage of the £127million release clause that is inserted in his current contract. The current asking price could be enough to sign the centre-forward, but it could probably increase with heightened demand.
Summer move on the cards?
The 22-year-old is one of the most prolific strikers in European football at this moment, which makes him an attractive prospect for any team to have. After all, he has 26 goals and two assists to his name this term from 33 matches across all competitions this season.
The South American could even improve on that output if the forward can achieve the potential he has shown so far. Antonio Conte could be the perfect man, considering how he has improved many players in his managerial career. We have seen that first hand in our squad as well, with Oliver Skipp being one of the best examples.
Nunez is a future superstar in the making, and adding him to our squad would greatly bolster our attacking quality. Not to mention, it would also solve the issue of a lack of backup options for Harry Kane currently. That being said, minutes could be an obstacle in our pursuit to sign the Benfica attacker.

After all, the Uruguay international may not be a starter for us when Kane would obviously start ahead of him. The Gunners are desperate for a centre-forward who can start regularly for them. That could probably give them some kind of edge as players would simply be attracted to a project where they can play regularly.
Then again, Kane’s future is surrounded by uncertainty, and we need to prepare for the worst in case of a departure. Nunez could fill that void if our superstar striker does leave us, but that is just one of the possibilities that could occur. It remains to be seen how this situation will turn out to be in the coming months ahead of the next season.
